Method for Measuring the Axial Clearance of a Gear Pump
Measuring the axial clearance of a gear pump is an essential process to ensure its proper performance and longevity. This method involves using simple tools and materials to accurately determine the space between the gears and the pump housing, which directly affects the efficiency and reliability of the pump.
Tools and Materials Required:
- A suitable standard wrench (preferably a socket wrench) or an open-end wrench.
- An outside micrometer with a range of 0–25mm.
- Two pieces of soft lead wire, with diameters between 0.5mm and 1.3mm.
Procedure:
- Installation of Gears: Begin by installing the main and driven gears into the pump housing.
- Application of Lead Wire: Apply three sections of soft lead wire onto the pitch circle of the gears using grease. The length of each lead wire should be approximately equal to the circumference of the gear's tooth profile.
- Assembly of Pump Cover: Place the pump cover, including the gasket and bushing, over the gears. Tighten the nuts symmetrically in 2–3 passes to ensure even pressure distribution.
- Disassembly: After tightening, carefully unscrew the pump cover nuts symmetrically and remove the cover. Carefully extract the lead wires and keep them clean for measurement.
- Measurement: Select four measuring points on each piece of lead wire. Use the outside micrometer to measure the thickness of the lead wire at these points and record the values.
Data Analysis:
Once all measurements are taken, calculate the average of the eight recorded values. This average represents the axial clearance of the gear pump. Compare this value to the standard specifications. Typically, the acceptable axial clearance for a normal gear pump ranges from 0.06mm to 0.10mm, while low-pressure pumps may allow a slightly larger range of 0.10mm to 0.25mm. If the measured value exceeds the recommended range, it may indicate wear or misalignment, and repairs or adjustments might be necessary.
Proper maintenance and regular checks of axial clearance can significantly extend the lifespan of a gear pump and prevent potential mechanical failures. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and use accurate tools to ensure reliable results.
