The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (Fraunhofer IAF) in Germany has made a breakthrough by enhancing the brightness of LED light bulbs to 2090 lumens using gallium nitride (GaN) in the control circuit. This innovation not only doubles the existing brightness of around 1000 lumens but also improves the luminous efficiency of LEDs by several percentage points.
A recent image shows how the institute retrofitted part of the control circuit, significantly increasing the luminous flux of LED bulbs. The control circuit plays a crucial role in maintaining a stable output current from the AC to DC converter. However, traditional LED chips are sensitive to current fluctuations, and the reliability of the control circuit directly affects the lifespan of the chip. Most control circuits use silicon-based transistors, which have limitations in terms of performance and efficiency.
In this new development, Fraunhofer IAF replaced silicon transistors with GaN transistors in the control circuit. This change allows the system to handle higher currents, temperatures, and voltages while maintaining high reliability. The efficiency of the control circuit reached 86%, which is 1 to 4 percentage points higher than that of silicon-based systems.
Moreover, GaN-based control circuits can operate at frequencies up to ten times higher than those using silicon transistors. This high-frequency operation enables the use of smaller inductors and capacitors, contributing to the miniaturization of LED bulbs and reducing manufacturing costs.
According to Fraunhofer IAF, replacing the control circuit of a standard 1000-lumen LED bulb with this GaN-based design can boost its brightness to an impressive 2090 lumens. This advancement marks a significant step forward in LED technology, offering brighter, more efficient, and more compact lighting solutions.
