Measuring the axial clearance of a gear pump is an essential step in ensuring its proper performance and longevity. To begin, you will need the following tools: 1. A suitable standard pipe wrench (or open-end wrench) and an outside micrometer with a range of 0–25 mm. 2. Two pieces of soft lead wire, each with a diameter between 0.5 mm and 1.3 mm. The length of each piece should be approximately equal to the circumference of the gear’s pitch circle. Next, follow these steps to measure the axial clearance: 1. Install the main and driven gears into the pump housing. 2. Apply three sections of soft lead wire to the pitch circle of both gears using a small amount of grease. This ensures that the lead wires will be compressed evenly during the measurement process. 3. Reinstall the pump cover, including the gasket and bushing. Tighten the nuts symmetrically and evenly in two to three passes to ensure even pressure distribution. 4. Carefully unscrew the pump cover nuts in a symmetrical and even manner. Remove the pump cover and carefully extract the soft lead wires, making sure not to damage them. 5. Measure the thickness of the lead wires at four different points on each wire using the outside micrometer. Record all measurements accurately. After collecting the data, calculate the average of the eight measured values. This average represents the axial clearance of the gear pump. Compare this value to the standard tolerance range. Typically, the normal axial clearance for a gear pump is between 0.06 mm and 0.10 mm. For low-pressure pumps, the acceptable range may be slightly wider, up to 0.10 mm to 0.25 mm. If the measured clearance exceeds these limits, it may indicate wear or misalignment, and repair or replacement may be necessary. Regular maintenance and accurate measurement of axial clearance can significantly extend the life of a gear pump and improve its overall efficiency.
