News link: At 4:00 pm on November 28th, a 28-year-old female teacher named Pei Jian from Pui Ying Primary School in Hengli Township was accidentally hit by a speeding vehicle while she and several colleagues were using safety ropes to guide students across a zebra crossing. The driver, Ye Mowei, was detained after the incident. According to traffic police, Ye Mowei had recently tested positive for drug use. The case is currently under investigation.
Following the incident, a reporter visited several private schools to understand their safety practices. Although many teachers were shocked by the accident, they emphasized that using safety ropes to assist students in crossing the street remains a common and widely accepted practice in many private institutions.
A few days ago, the reporter visited Long Cheng Primary School in Changcheng Town. Located near a busy road, the school’s entrance is adjacent to Chang Huang Road, a major thoroughfare connecting Changping and Huangjiang. There is only a zebra crossing without any traffic lights at the school gate. To ensure student safety, the school organizes four teachers to pull red ropes each time students cross. Two male teachers hold red flags and stretch the rope across the road, while two female teachers stand behind the gate, holding the other end. Once the teachers reach the opposite side, all four pull the rope together, signaling drivers to stop. Students then cross the road safely under the supervision of the teachers.
Principal Li of Long Cheng Primary School explained that the school has implemented this safety measure to protect students. The same four teachers are assigned to this task regularly, allowing them to gain experience and better coordinate their efforts. “This helps us ensure not just our own safety but also that of the students,†said Principal Li.
According to the principal, every school day, a designated teacher oversees the process. In addition, the school collaborates with local village committees to assign security guards to monitor the area around the school.
After the incident involving Teacher Pei Jian, the school reaffirmed the importance of using safety ropes to keep students safe. However, to better protect the teachers, the school decided to extend the length of the ropes, ensuring that they can be pulled from one side of the road to the other without putting themselves in harm's way.
“Using safety ropes is not limited to private schools; it is also commonly seen in some public schools,†Principal Li noted. To prevent similar incidents from occurring again, the school is exploring additional measures to enhance traffic safety around the campus.
