Genetically modified tomato cultivates nutritional value equivalent to blueberry

Tomatoes

A groundbreaking new tomato variety is set to transform the nutritional profile of everyday foods.

Engineered with a gene from snapdragons, this unique purple tomato produces anthocyanins—powerful antioxidants known for their potential cancer-fighting properties. Scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, England, have successfully developed this genetically modified tomato, aiming to enhance the nutritional value of popular foods like ketchup and pizza. Professor Cathie Martin, the lead researcher, believes that these tomatoes could provide a cost-effective way to bring the same beneficial compounds found in blueberries and cranberries into everyday diets.

Despite its origin in the UK, the development faced regulatory challenges due to strict EU rules on genetically modified crops. To overcome this, Professor Martin partnered with Canadian farms in Ontario, where regulations are more favorable towards GM technology. A 465-square-meter greenhouse has been set up to cultivate enough of these tomatoes for further research and potential commercial use.

The next step involves testing the health benefits of the purple tomato juice. Early studies on mice suggest that anthocyanins may have anti-inflammatory and cancer-preventive effects. However, public perception remains a major hurdle. A 2010 EU survey showed that three out of four people oppose GM products, highlighting the need for better communication about their benefits.

Professor Martin hopes that by showcasing the positive impact of this tomato, consumers will begin to see genetically modified foods as a valuable addition to their diet. She aims to launch the product in North America within two years, with the goal of shifting public opinion through education and transparency. Environmental physicist Nick Pidgeon from Cardiff University agrees, noting that past distrust, such as during the mad cow disease crisis, still influences public views. He believes emphasizing the benefits of GM technology can help change perceptions and encourage wider acceptance.
