Explosion-proof lamps and their covers should be designed to automatically cut off the power supply before opening. However, due to the complexity of the interlocking mechanism, it is often difficult to implement in practice. As a result, most lamps only feature a clear warning label on the outer casing, indicating that they must not be powered on during maintenance. Even after the lamp is turned off, the surface can still be very hot, especially for incandescent, high-pressure mercury, and high-pressure sodium lamps. If the cover is opened immediately, there remains a risk of igniting flammable gas mixtures. Therefore, extra caution is required when handling these types of lamps.
On the other hand, explosion-proof fluorescent lamps are equipped with an interlocking system that ensures the power is disconnected before the cover can be opened. This design enhances both convenience and safety during maintenance. Since fluorescent lamps are cold light sources, their surfaces do not get hot, allowing the cover to be opened immediately after the power is turned off.
When replacing bulbs or tubes, it's crucial to protect the explosion-proof joint surfaces from damage. After cleaning, apply phosphate paste or 204-1 anti-rust oil to the surface—never use regular paint. The surface must remain free of rust. If minor rust appears, it should be removed carefully without causing any damage. Ensure that dustproof and waterproof sealing rings are intact, as this is vital for increased safety lamps. If the seal is damaged, replace it with an identical one, and consider replacing the entire lamp if necessary. Always check the lamp cover for cracks or damage and replace it if needed.
Regular maintenance of explosion-proof luminaires is essential to ensure their continued safe operation. Maintenance personnel should receive proper training to understand the lamp’s performance and usage requirements. They must be familiar with the lamp’s structure and components. During inspections, check the plastic housing (including transparent parts) for discoloration or damage. If significant aging or damage is found, the lamp should be taken out of service and replaced. Also, check if the protective net is loose, corroded, or damaged and repair or replace it as needed.
Cleaning the lamp housing regularly helps maintain its light output and heat dissipation efficiency. Use a damp cloth or spray according to the housing’s protection rating. Never use dry cloths on plastic parts to avoid static buildup. If the light source is damaged, turn off the lamp immediately and arrange for replacement to prevent long-term stress on electrical components like the ballast.
When opening the cover, always follow the warning instructions and disconnect the power first. If moisture accumulates inside the lamp housing in humid environments, drain it promptly and replace the seals to maintain the lamp’s protective capabilities. Avoid frequent removal of sealed parts, as this can compromise the lamp’s integrity. Before closing the cover, gently wipe the lens and transparent parts with a slightly damp cloth to improve light efficiency. Apply a thin layer of 204-1 anti-rust oil on the flameproof joint surface and ensure the seal ring is correctly positioned.
