Mars One plans to launch the Mars probe for 18 years

The Mars One project has set an ambitious goal: to send the first group of selected individuals to Mars in 2025. To move closer to this vision, the Mars One Foundation has announced a significant step forward — launching an unmanned probe mission in 2018. This development marks a major milestone in their long-term plan to establish a permanent human settlement on the Red Planet. In a recent statement, the foundation revealed that it has entered into a partnership with two leading aerospace companies: Lockheed Martin and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL). These collaborations are expected to play a crucial role in the success of future missions. According to the announcement, Lockheed Martin will be responsible for developing an upgraded version of the "Phoenix" lander, which successfully touched down on Mars in 2007. Meanwhile, SSTL will focus on building relay satellites to transmit data and images from the Mars probe back to Earth. The project also plans to engage the public by offering a unique opportunity to participate in the mission. In 2014, Mars One will launch the "Mars Mission Contest," inviting people around the world to submit ideas for future exploration. The winning concept will have the chance to be part of the actual mission, carried out alongside robotic probes. Although the partnership with Lockheed Martin and SSTL is still in the conceptual stage, the foundation has confirmed that both companies will contribute at least $25 million and $82,000 respectively. Funding for the project will primarily come from sponsors and corporate partners, rather than public fundraising. While the exact cost of the mission remains uncertain, the collaboration with these industry leaders signals a serious commitment to making the dream of Mars colonization a reality.
