According to the announcement, Lockheed Martin will be responsible for developing an upgraded version of the Phoenix lander, which successfully touched down on Mars in 2007. Meanwhile, SSTL will focus on building relay satellites to help transmit images and data from the Mars probe back to Earth.
As part of its outreach and engagement strategy, Mars One plans to involve the public in the journey. In 2014, the foundation will launch the "Mars Mission Contest," offering individuals the chance to be part of the historic mission. The winner of the contest will join the robotic explorer on its journey to Mars, symbolizing a new era of space exploration where people can contribute to scientific discovery.
While the partnership with Lockheed Martin and SSTL is still in the conceptual stage, the financial details remain under discussion. However, it's clear that both companies will invest significant resources into the project. Each is expected to contribute at least $25 million and approximately $82,000, respectively. The Mars One Foundation has also emphasized that its funding will come primarily from sponsors and partners, rather than through public fundraising campaigns.
