One of the common issues these systems face is "ice blockage," which occurs when moisture accumulates in the throttling section of the thermal expansion valve, leading to freezing and potential system failure. This problem can significantly affect the efficiency and performance of the chiller.
Ice blockage typically happens in refrigeration systems that use Freon as a refrigerant. Since Freon and water are immiscible, any moisture present in the system can separate from the refrigerant and freeze at low temperatures, causing blockages in valves and pipes. Additionally, water in the system can react with Freon, leading to the formation of acidic substances that may corrode internal components of the chiller. To prevent this, the moisture content in Freon-based systems must be strictly controlled, typically limited to a mass fraction of no more than 0.0025%.
The presence of moisture in the refrigeration system can come from several sources. During installation, if the system isn't properly evacuated, residual moisture may remain inside. Improper maintenance or charging procedures can also introduce air and moisture into the system. Leaks in the low-pressure sections can allow air to enter when the pressure drops below atmospheric levels. Furthermore, impure Freon itself might contain moisture or other contaminants, contributing to the problem.
To mitigate these risks, it's essential to dry the system thoroughly before charging it with refrigerant. Installing a desiccant filter is also recommended to absorb any remaining moisture. However, over time, these filters can become saturated and lose their effectiveness, so they should be replaced regularly.
At Dongyuejin Chiller Plant, all chillers are pre-charged with refrigerant and lubricating oil before leaving the factory. If a unit experiences operational issues, it may require recharging.
