Water-based paint will welcome rapid development

In recent years, as more stringent environmental regulations have been introduced globally, traditional solvent-based paints—known for their pollution and toxicity—are gradually being phased out. This shift has created a golden opportunity for water-based and other eco-friendly coatings to take center stage. With government support and stricter air quality control measures, the demand for green paint solutions is rising rapidly. Following the implementation of the "paint consumption tax," China introduced a revised national standard for waterborne coatings on July 1, 2014. This move further accelerated the adoption of environmentally friendly paints, particularly in the wood coating sector. Water-based paints align with global trends in sustainable technology and are seen as the next generation of traditional coatings, paving the way for a new era of green painting solutions. Under the updated Environmental Protection Law, penalties for polluting enterprises have no upper limit, making volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from conventional paints a major target for regulation. Current policies are putting significant pressure on solvent-based paint manufacturers. Measures such as environmental credit evaluations and the introduction of taxes on oil-based paints are forcing companies to transition toward greener alternatives. As a result, smaller paint producers are losing their competitive edge, and the industry is undergoing a process of consolidation. Waterborne coatings are now poised for rapid growth. China’s annual coating production is approaching 13 million tons, yet less than 50% of this is environmentally friendly. In contrast, countries like those in Europe and the U.S. use environmentally friendly coatings at rates of 70–80%. In the architectural coatings market, which makes up 45% of total paint usage, 90% are already water-based, with powder coatings accounting for about 8%. Traditional paints, due to their harmful effects, have long been banned in many Western markets. Since January 1, 2004, the EU has completely prohibited the production and sale of solvent-based paints within its borders, pushing the market toward water-based alternatives. Similarly, the U.S. imposed restrictions on Chinese paint furniture imports in 2004. Water-based paints, using water as a diluent and containing no toxic chemicals, offer a safer and more sustainable option. Their VOC emissions are 60–70% lower than those of oil-based paints, making them a key solution in reducing atmospheric pollution. While the Chinese government supports the application of waterborne coatings, consumer awareness and acceptance remain crucial. Strengthening market regulation and ensuring high-quality products and services will be essential for promoting the development of the water-based paint industry. Gong Yufei, General Manager of Boddin Waterborne Coatings, noted that the market demand for water-based paints is growing faster than expected. To sustain this growth, strong technical support and service must be in place to help furniture manufacturers and distributors embrace and trust water-based wood lacquers.
