As we all know, stainless steel pipes typically undergo pickling and passivation processes before leaving the factory. However, some users may request additional degreasing treatments. Ideally, this degreasing should be performed on-site once the pipeline has been safely installed. This ensures thorough cleaning without risking damage to the pipes during transportation. Manufacturers generally do not perform this step prior to delivery due to the potential risks involved.
With the rapid advancement of industrialization in our country, there's a growing demand for stainless steel pipes across various sectors like petrochemicals, natural gas, pharmaceuticals, instrumentation, aviation, and aerospace. These industries place significant emphasis on maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and integrity within their piping systems. For instance, oxygen pipelines must meet stringent cleanliness criteria because they transport highly pressurized, pure oxygen which can react violently with contaminants such as oil residues or metallic particles. Even trace amounts of these substances could lead to hazardous reactions, potentially causing severe accidents.
To address these concerns, newly installed equipment pipelines often undergo chemical cleaning prior to operational testing. Suppliers are frequently instructed by clients to ensure that the pipelines are thoroughly degreased.
For stainless steel oxygen pipelines specifically, the degreasing procedure involves several key steps: initial water rinsing followed by manual degreasing, another round of water rinsing, and finally, purging with oil-free compressed air or nitrogen.
During the initial water rinse, low-pressure but high-velocity water jets are used to flush the inside of the pipe. Pressure levels are maintained around 0.6 MPa to effectively dislodge any loose debris such as dust, rust flakes, or scale deposits.
Manual degreasing requires preparing a suitable cleaning agent mixed according to instructions. This mixture is then applied systematically throughout the pipeline using brushes or cloths. Throughout this phase, it’s crucial to monitor the condition of the cleaning fluid regularly. If the fluid appears visibly soiled, it should be replaced immediately to maintain effectiveness. This step aims to eliminate all traces of lubricants, protective oils, and other organic materials from the pipe interiors.
Following the manual degrease, extensive water rinsing follows until the effluent runs clear. This final rinse ensures no residual cleaning agents remain inside the pipe, which might otherwise cause contamination later.
The final stage involves purging the cleaned pipe with clean, dry compressed air or nitrogen. The goal here is to ensure no moisture remains inside the pipe while preventing reintroduction of contaminants post-cleaning.
Acceptance criteria for degreased stainless steel pipes depend largely on specifications outlined by the project designers. In cases where no specific guidelines exist, carbon tetrachloride is commonly used as an effective indicator solvent to verify successful degreasing. Proper documentation and adherence to safety protocols are essential throughout this entire process.
