The use of hollow glass bricks was perfectly suited for the Olympic projects like the Water Cube, aligning with the "Green Olympics" concept. As a result, this eco-friendly building material was chosen from the very beginning of the design process. During the bidding phase for the Water Cube project, three companies submitted proposals: Zhenhua Decorative Glass Co., Ltd. (Jinghua Glass Brick) from Shandong Dezhou Jinghua Group, Hebei Jihengyuan Industrial Group Co., Ltd. (Haiwei Glass Brick), and Witt Company, along with Shanghai Xinghu Company (which later discontinued operations). However, since the Water Cube required the less common 2480 type (240×240×80mm) rather than the traditional 1980 type (190×190×80mm), the latter two companies were unable to meet the specifications and were eliminated from the competition. In the final showdown against Italy’s Witt Company, the Shandong Dezhou Jinghua Group accelerated its technical upgrades within just two months, successfully producing both standard and corner bricks. This effort secured their victory in the bid. According to staff from Zhenhua Decorative Glass Co., Ltd., the hollow glass bricks used in the Water Cube are ideal for indoor applications such as bathroom partitions, room dividers, porches, and functional walls that require natural lighting, sound insulation, and thermal efficiency. These bricks not only enhance the aesthetics of a space but also fulfill essential functional requirements, making them a rare and valuable decorative material.
