At Shenzhen Airport, taxi drivers used to frequently break the rules by leaving the queue from the VIP entrance or the A-building exit channel to enter the B building and wait for passengers. Some even parked illegally at night and returned to their shifts later. These behaviors caused chaos in the taxi stand and frustrated passengers. To address these issues, on May 1st this year, the Shenzhen Municipal Communications Commission launched a high-definition video surveillance system at the airport’s taxi area. The system has significantly improved order and helped recover lost luggage for many passengers.
The system includes 19 high-definition cameras covering all key areas of the taxi stand, such as the car area, waiting zones, and areas where illegal activities often occur. This ensures full coverage with no blind spots, allowing for real-time monitoring under all weather conditions. With this technology, authorities can now effectively track and punish violations like jumping the queue, refusing passengers, and illegal parking.
Since its implementation, over 30 taxi violations have been investigated, and more than 20 cases of lost baggage have been successfully recovered. The number of illegal activities, such as drivers leaving their vehicles to solicit passengers or negotiate fares, has also dropped significantly. As a result, passenger waiting times have become more orderly, and conflicts between passengers and staff have decreased due to clear evidence provided by the video footage.
According to the Municipal Communications Commission, about 40 people per flight compete for taxis, making it essential to maintain control and order. The new surveillance system is part of a broader effort to improve traffic management at the airport. The city’s comprehensive traffic control center already monitors over 2,000 video channels, many of which include high-definition footage.
With the advancement of high-definition surveillance technology and decreasing costs, similar systems are expected to be implemented at the upcoming T3 terminal of Shenzhen Airport and on sections of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway. This innovative approach not only enhances security but also improves the overall passenger experience.
