Peasant labor frequency shift slot labor security problem

In the chilly winds of Shenyang Road No. 46, a bustling job market unfolded on the 9th. Migrant workers in thick coats gathered, seeking temporary work. Among them, a young man stood out—dressed in an edgy style, he caught the attention of recruiters. He was tall and well-presented, and before he even spoke, several agents approached him. One restaurant owner from Minjiang Second Road offered him a position preparing Western food, mainly pizza, asking, “How much do you want per month?” The young man, named Liu, responded with a salary of 2,300 yuan. Upon hearing the offer, he turned away without hesitation. Liu, just 20 years old from Pingdu, had worked in a city hotel two years ago. He was diligent and hardworking, earning his boss’s trust. However, after six months, his salary remained below 2,000 yuan, which left him discouraged. He then found another job through his cousin, where he earned slightly more, but the monotonous work soon made him quit again. With his girlfriend and daily expenses, he needed to find another job, leading him to work in a kitchen once more. After the Spring Festival, when peers shared their experiences, Liu felt pessimistic about the future in the hospitality industry. He eventually quit again. “Wages under 2,000 are too low,” Liu said. “I go to the movies and eat with my girlfriend every month. I’m always a ‘moonlight family.’ This time, I’m looking for a job that pays at least 3,000 yuan.” His plan is to learn a trade in a factory, believing that he's still young and should seek better opportunities. Meanwhile, hotel owner Zhang Bo from Minnan District waited for three hours at the recruitment site but saw only half of his staff return after the holiday. Most of his employees were born in the 80s or 90s. Although wages were not low, many young workers spent their money quickly and often left jobs within a short time. “Even with a salary of 5,000 yuan a month, it’s unrealistic,” Zhang said, as no one had applied yet. Ms. Zhou, a recruitment specialist at a company in Chengyang’s Airport Industrial Park, faced similar challenges. Her company expanded this year and planned to hire 100 workers, including screen printers and operators. Despite offering salaries between 2,500 and 5,000 yuan, they failed to attract any candidates on the 9th. “Workers have high expectations, and some positions require technical skills, making it hard to fill roles,” she said. The lack of workers delayed the opening of the new plant. Experts point out that frequent job-hopping among young migrant workers is becoming a growing issue. According to data, over 58% of rural migrant workers are from the post-1980 generation, who are more educated and independent in career choices. This leads to higher mobility, which can harm both companies and individuals. Leng Jichang, Secretary-General of Qingdao Municipal Human Resources Professional Committee, warned that high turnover negatively affects businesses. Many small enterprises rely on temporary workers, avoiding contracts and insurance. This instability hinders growth. On the other hand, young workers today face less economic pressure and have more options, making loyalty to a single company rare. Sheng Shaohua, a lawyer from Shandong Yabo Law Firm, added that frequent job changes also threaten labor rights. Short-term or part-time workers may not qualify for legal protections, such as social insurance. If they leave before completing their contract, they risk losing benefits. As the new year began, the odd job market at Shenyang Road No. 46 became busy. Companies struggling with worker shortages rushed to recruit. While job seekers now have more choices, the trend of frequent job-hopping remains a challenge. Experts urge both employers and workers to consider long-term stability for mutual benefit.
