1. Definition
Tools, often referred to as cutting tools, are essential in machining processes. They can be either mechanical or hand-operated. In the context of metalworking, the term "tool" typically refers to a device used for cutting metal materials. Broadly speaking, cutting tools include both conventional tools and abrasive tools.
2. Tool Materials
The materials used to manufacture cutting tools must possess high hardness, wear resistance, sufficient bending strength, impact toughness, and chemical stability. They should also have good machinability, including ease of cutting, forging, and heat treatment, and should not deform easily under stress.
Cemented carbide inserts are known for their high wear resistance when made from hard materials, but they tend to have lower bending strength and impact toughness. On the other hand, high-speed steel remains the most widely used material due to its excellent flexural strength, impact resistance, and ease of processing. Hard alloys follow closely behind in popularity.
Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride is ideal for cutting hardened steels and cast iron, while polycrystalline diamond is suitable for non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composites like glass fiber-reinforced plastics. Carbon tool steel and alloy tool steel are now mainly used for manual tools such as chisels, dies, and taps.
Carbide inserts are often coated with layers of titanium carbide, titanium nitride, alumina, or composite materials using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is also gaining traction, especially for high-speed steel tools like drills, taps, and milling cutters. These coatings act as barriers against chemical reactions and heat transfer, significantly extending tool life—often by up to three times compared to uncoated tools.
As machining operations become more demanding—requiring higher temperatures, pressures, speeds, and precision—the need for advanced tools continues to grow. To meet these challenges, future developments will focus on new tool materials, improved coating technologies that balance hardness and toughness, better indexable tool designs, and enhanced manufacturing precision to ensure consistent quality and optimal performance.
3. Classification
Tool holders can be categorized based on the type of cutting motion and the corresponding shape of the cutting edge.
(1) General-purpose tools include turning tools, shaping tools, milling cutters (excluding form tools), boring tools, drills, reamers, and saws.
(2) Forming tools have cutting edges that match the shape of the workpiece, such as forming turning tools, shaping tools, broaches, and thread-cutting tools.
(3) Specialized tools include gear hobs, bevel gear cutters, and other custom-designed tools for specific applications.
Kemei designs, tests, and builds all types of grinding wheels. The aim of abrasive grinding wheels is to modify the surface structure and/or preparation of a workpiece. In general, fixed abrasive wheels are characterized by grit size (abrasive grain), bonding type, substances used, and the grade and structure of the fine grinding wheel. Users of our wheels can choose between a specially formulated wheel tailored to their exact needs, or choose one of our reliable standard specifications. Additionally, the physical and chemical properties of the diamond and/or CBN crystals can influence the performance of the grinding wheel. Having over 20 years of experience in our field has earned us the prestige of manufacturing the highest quality fixed super abrasive wheels and abrasive grinding wheels. Above all, being an abrasive wheel manufacturer, allows us to offer you success in your future projects.
Kemei produce and aim on the following types grinding tools, such as aluminum oxide grinding wheel, silicon carbide grinding wheels, mounted points, Diamond Grinding Wheels, CBN Grinding Wheels and all types of saw blades and cut off wheels.
If you need any type of grinding tool or professional advice about grinding on your workpieces. Don`t hesitate to contact us!
