IMEC has developed a silicon solar cell with a cell conversion efficiency of 23.3%, which is achieved by comb back electrodes

Solar cells developed by IMEC et al. are equipped with an interdigitated back-contact (IBC). The size is 2cm square.

IMEC Belgium announced that it has collaborated with several well-known solar cell manufacturers to develop a crystalline silicon solar cell with a cell conversion efficiency of 23.3%. Cooperation partners include Germany Shott Solar, France Total, France GDF-SUEZ, Belgium Photovoltech, Netherlands Solland Solar, Kaneka and Dow Corning seven companies. IMEC will use it to pursue the industry's leading US SunPower and Sanyo Electric with high conversion efficiency.

The unit size of the solar battery released this time is 2cm square. Regarding the key to achieving high efficiency, IMEC mentioned the following points: The surface of an n-silicon substrate made by the FZ (Floating Zone) method was processed into a pyramid-type random roughness; the surface electrode was removed, and the back-electrode (Back-Contact) was used. The shape of the comb is comb-shaped; an encapsulation layer of SiO2 and an anti-reflection film of SiN are formed; the electrode material is aluminum (Al).

In terms of conversion efficiency, the short-circuit current density (JSC) was 41.6 mA/cm2, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) was 696 mV, and the shape factor (FF) was 80.4%.
