In the world of athletic training, injuries are a common challenge—some are obvious, while others go unnoticed. To address this issue, students from Imperial College have created an innovative "injury kit" designed to help athletes detect and assess the severity of their injuries in real time.
The kit utilizes a pressure-sensitive film developed by Japan’s Fuji Electric, a material typically used in printing technology to check the alignment of pages in a rolled stack. When applied to clothing, it allows users to sense injuries without invasive procedures. The film reacts to pressure by forming red "petal-like" blocks on the affected area. The deeper the color, the more severe the injury is likely to be.
Talan Skeels-Piggins, a British Paralympic alpine skier, collaborated with the students during the development process. He shared his perspective: “Paralympic athletes often face various injuries during training, such as in downhill skiing or wheelchair rugby. Similar issues can occur in motorcycle racing, where it's hard to tell if you've been injured after a fall. That’s why I worked closely with the team to develop this ‘injury kit’—to provide a clear visual indicator of potential harm.â€
According to experts, the most critical risk for high paraplegics lies in self-regulatory reflexes, which can lead to life-threatening spikes in blood pressure. This suit aims to solve that by using color to signal the location and severity of injuries. It also helps identify old injuries and assess their potential impact. The development team tested the diaphragm by placing it inside animal bones to simulate fractures and other internal damage based on impact levels.
Currently, the suit is still in its prototype stage. It is sewn into sweat-wicking fabric, but the team hopes to integrate the sensor into helmets or other protective gear in the future. Skeels-Piggins believes the suit has broader applications beyond disabled athletes and could benefit anyone involved in high-risk sports.
Interestingly, the students at Imperial College didn’t expect that this garment would find a huge market in China, where it might even be called a “sacred dress.†In Chinese culture, only those who show proper respect are allowed to wear it, making it a symbol of authenticity. With this suit, it becomes easy to distinguish between a real fall and a staged one.

The East-West glass slide is a glass slide or quartz slide that is used to place a glass slide or quartz slide when it is observed under a microscope. During production, a cell or a sample containing a certain tissue is randomly placed on the slide glass, and a cover slip is placed on it for observation a similar material that produces a phase difference.
