The whole genome sequencing of peanuts led by our country’s scientists was formally announced this afternoon. This is the first time in the world. According to analysis, this will change the pattern of China's edible oil market.

The whole genome sequencing of peanuts to diploid wild peanuts as the research object, led by Chinese scientists, India, the United States and other countries to participate in the completion. Among them, 70% of the nucleotide sequences in the peanut genome are the result of repetition, which has subverted the 50% standard previously agreed by the international community. This provides strong support for greatly increasing the oil production rate of peanuts.

According to Yan Shanlin, chief scientist of the National Peanut Industry System, “You can do tofu in the future, or if the oil content can be increased from the current 50% to more than 60%, then these very large breakthrough results can be achieved. ”

With this “genetic map” of peanuts, scientists can follow the map and cultivate new, high-quality, drought-tolerant and disease-resistant new varieties. The breeding cycle will be shortened from the current 5 to 6 years to 1 to 2 years.

At the same time, as the current domestic edible oil is mainly peanut oil and soybean oil, and soybean oil raw materials are mostly imported genetically modified soybeans. According to experts, the next step in the molecular breeding of peanuts is expected to accelerate the emergence of some new varieties to replace genetically modified soybean oil. Li Hongjie, Scientific Research Director of Shandong Shengfeng Seed Industry Technology Co., Ltd., told reporters: “We can breed new varieties of high-yield and high-oil varieties through sequencing, increase the self-sufficiency ratio of edible oil from the current 43% to about 50%, and reduce the use of genetically modified soybeans. Dependence on imports, this should be a direction for the future."
