Scientists use plants to make carbon fiber to effectively reduce costs and pollution

According to foreign media reports on January 23, American scientists have successfully used plants to make carbon fiber, thereby reducing their original costly costs, while helping drivers save fuel while also reducing carbon pollution.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics are widely used in high-end cars and racing materials due to their light and strong characteristics. Cars made of carbon fiber are lighter than cars made of steel, so they require less fuel, are faster, and are more fuel efficient.

However, most of the carbon fibers used commercially are very expensive. This is partly due to the high cost of its manufacturing process. We know that carbon fiber is made of a chemical molecule called acrylonitrile, while acrylonitrile is made of petroleum, ammonia, oxygen, and expensive catalysts. This not only means that the cost of carbon fiber will be subject to volatile (rising) oil prices, but also a large amount of excess heat and toxic by-products.

Scientists have now found a way to make carbon fiber more economical and environmentally friendly. The Gregg Beckham team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the United States found that they could use plant waste, such as corn stover and wheat straw, and succeeded in producing acrylonitrile.

According to a recent study published by Science magazine, scientists have broken down these plant materials into sugars, converted them to acids, and combined them with cheap catalysts to produce acrylonitrile. And this process will not generate excessive heat, or even toxic by-products.

The research team is now working with external companies and is committed to transforming its production process to a commercial scale. They also hope that the carbon fiber produced by this new method will pass automotive testing in the near future.

Greg Beckham said: “We will carry out more basic research. We are excited to expand the scale of production of acrylonitrile, but also look forward to the use of this durable chemical material can be used in everyday life. All aspects." (Practice compilation: Sun Nian reviewer: Liu Yang)
