New material removes heavy metals from the soil




Researchers at the Institute of Agro-Environment and Sustainable Development of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences have discovered a new type of magnetic material that can trap heavy metals in the soil and transform them into magnetic solids.
  
The material is composed of micron magnetic particles, silane coupling agent and sodium chloroacetate. It has the function of capture and transformation, magnetic separation, and has the advantages of small chemical disturbance to the soil, fast capture speed, simple magnetic separation operation, material preparation and regeneration. The method is simple and so on. Experiments have shown that this material can trap various forms of heavy metal compounds such as cadmium, zinc, lead, copper, and nickel in the soil and convert it into magnetic solids for separation and purification. The removal rate of heavy metals from cadmium and lead is 84.9%, respectively. 72.2%, solids recovery rate of up to 98.7%. The material helps to remove the non-magnetic heavy metal from the soil system by magnetic separation and development, and has developed into a method for the rapid removal of soil heavy metal pollution.
