Bioenergy must become an important part of the EU's energy mix

On Wednesday, January 17, MEPS will vote on three documents in the Clean Energy Program: the Renewable Energy Policy, Energy Efficiency Policy and Governance Regulation.

The renewable energy approach includes the development of policies for the production and promotion of renewable energy in the European Union. Currently, it requires the EU to achieve at least 20% of its renewable energy consumption by 2020, and each country has its own goals. In 2016, the European Commission proposed to increase European renewable energy consumption to 27% by 2030.

The Energy Efficiency Policy sets a 20% energy efficiency goal for 2020. In 2016, the European Commission proposed that Europe's energy efficiency target by 2030 will increase to 30%. In the same year, in order to improve regulation and ensure that energy and climate indicators were met, some target governance regulations were proposed. It is now MEPS's turn to vote on these proposals.

Previously, 62 scholars signed a letter to support bioenergy and acknowledged its potential as a renewable energy source to promote bioenergy projects.

As the scholars signed in the letter: "We believe that at least in the next 30 years, bioenergy will become an important part of the EU's energy structure. Without bioenergy and CCUS technology, a commitment to reduce COP21 by 1.5 degrees will be achieved. It is very difficult. The negative impact of its failure on climate and society will have a major impact on humans and biodiversity."
