Introduction
Feeding the feed to the piglets in the delivery room is to ensure a smooth transition to solid feed when the piglets are weaned. This measure assumes that the feed intake of the feedstock is very limited and will familiarize the piglets with solid feeds by: 1) increasing the weaning weight of the piglets, and 2) encouraging the piglets to feed solid feed after weaning, 3) Allow the gastrointestinal tract to adapt to solid feeds, thereby alleviating the growth rate during weaning.
At the beginning of the study, the Prairie Pig Center had delayed the weaning age (to 28 days). The researchers hypothesized that the benefits of feeding the trough in the case of delayed weaning would be more pronounced. In addition, we also examined whether the piglet's response to the teaching material differed between the different birth weights.
Test process
This trial used 15 weeks of delivery data from the Prairie Pig Center (12 sows/building pig houses). A one-stage diet (commodity) is provided for piglets from the first eight delivery rooms using a round multi-feed trough 21 to 28 days postpartum. Piglets are weaned at 28 days of age.
All weaned piglets in each teaching material processing group were weighed weekly, graded by weight, and the top 24 and the lightest 24 redistributed fields, 4 in each column. Then randomly arrange the processing of the field. In this way, there are six most weight-weighted fields and six lightest weighted fields per week. During the trial, it was noted that all piglets from all weeks were transferred from the side of the sow to the same time for the weaning feed.
A camera is placed above the field to record the individual's use of the trough. The individual use chute is defined as the piglet's head extending above the trough and into the trough. The back of the piglet is painted with a number as a logo. In order to facilitate the recording of the video, the illumination is continuously provided.
Results and Discussion
The piglets that were able to eat the feed trough in the last week weighed 130 g at weaning (Table 1). However, this difference was not statistically significant (P>0.10), indicating that there are other factors besides the teachings.
Weight loss occurred in all piglets 24 hours after weaning. Contrary to expectations, piglets that did not receive the dip were more likely to grow faster after weaning, while there was no significant difference in feed intake (P>0.10). Therefore, the overall feed conversion efficiency of piglets that did not receive the feed material was better (P>0.01).
The teachings shown in Table 1 interact with body weight (0, 1, 4 days, P < 0.05) and are shown in more detail in Figure 1 on the day of weaning. High-weight piglets (weighing 240g of weaning weight, or 2.3% of body weight) are more important for the litter than for low-weight piglets (weaning weight gain of 30g, or 0.5% of body weight).

Piglets that were able to eat the chute in the last week of breastfeeding weaned 130 grams (Table 2). However, this difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.10), indicating that there are other factors besides the teachings.
Further research is ongoing to determine if this is due to the fact that the heavier piglets consume more grooving in the delivery room.
The number of visits to the troughs in the 0, 1 and 4 days after the weaning of the piglets that were able to eat the chute in the delivery room was less than that of the other piglets. This mode is more pronounced during the last 8 hours of each 24-hour period. This is also contrary to our hypothesis. Our hypothesis is that the feedstock allows piglets to adapt to solid feed and encourages feeding during the weaning phase. Feed intake is similar, so it appears that piglets that have used the feedstock will consume more feed each time they visit the weaning trough during the weaning phase. The number of piglets that have not eaten the feed material has increased in the last 8 hours of the day. It may be because these piglets are not suitable for solid feed, so there is less feed for each visit, but the last time of each day. Driven by hunger, more visits to the trough. But this point needs further confirmation.
Conclusion
Feeding the piglets in the delivery room 7 days prior to weaning has no sustainable benefits for post-weaning growth performance, regardless of weaning weight.

Research is now underway to validate these results under more commercial conditions. However, producers should not take it for granted that piglets respond to the teachings.
