Pingguo Aluminium "Red Mud Iron" officially put into operation

How to deal with waste red mud in alumina production has been a worldwide problem. On June 16, this problem was successfully solved by Chinalco Guangxi Branch (Pingguo Aluminum). On the same day, the company's red mud recycling project was put into production. The construction scale of the project is to treat red mud 2.2 million tons annually, and can recover more than 55% of quality iron ore concentrate 228,800 tons per year. After the production, the annual sales income will reach 56.66 million yuan, and the average annual profit after tax will be 14.61 million yuan.

It is reported that the total investment of the project is 79.92 million yuan. It uses pulsating high-gradient two-stage magnetic separation technology to build four 550,000 t/a red mud election iron production lines. The project started on November 1 last year and was originally planned to start production on June 30, 2011. During the implementation of the project, the participating units such as design and supervision, in particular the Chinalco Guangxi branch, undertook self-operated maintenance and information centers to overcome the unfavorable factors such as drawings, steel, and equipment that cannot be reached in time. Make use of rest days to work overtime, cross-operations, make reasonable arrangements, strive to grab schedules, ensure quality, and complete construction of red mud recycling iron projects in advance.

Red mud is a very fine-grained, strong alkaline solid waste produced during the production of alumina from bauxite, and produces about 0.8 to 1.5 tons of red mud per ton of alumina produced. China is a large producer of alumina, and it is estimated that by 2015, the cumulative stock of red mud will reach 350 million tons. Chinalco Guangxi Branch has been producing 13 million tons of red mud since it was put into production. Red mud is stored in large quantities, which not only consumes land but also wastes resources. It also easily causes environmental pollution and safety hazards. In March of this year, Chinalco Guangxi Branch appointed the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Xu Delong, president of the Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, as chief experts to jointly tackle the worldwide problem of "emissions and utilization of red mud."
