According to foreign media New Atlas reports, combining strength (withstand force without permanent deformation) and toughness (withstand force without breaking) in a material may be difficult. However, it is said that a new substance obtained by mixing wood fiber with spider silk may be able to do this.
In order to make this experimental new material, scientists from Aalto University and VTT Technology Research Center in Finland began to study ordinary birch tree pulp. It is then broken down into cellulose nanofibers (microfibers), which are then aligned with each other within the stent. The spider silk binder is then added to form a soft energy dissipation matrix, which contains and connects aligned nanofibers.
Once it solidifies, the resulting material is found to be "better than most synthetic and natural materials today", and can stretch without breaking while resisting irreversible deformation. Although certain types of plastic also show similar combinations of generally mutually exclusive properties, materials developed by Finnish scientists are completely biodegradable and free of petroleum.
In other words, ordinary spider silk cannot usually be produced cheaply on a commercial scale. With this in mind, the researchers used methods that have been used at least once, but from DNA-modifying bacteria. "Because we know the structure of (spider web) DNA, we can copy it and use it to make silk protein molecules that are chemically similar to spider silk," said Professor Markus Linder of Aalto University. "DNA contains all this information."
Now scientists plan to use this material to make implants, textiles, packaging, and impact-resistant items. They recently published a paper on the study in the journal Science Advances.
