In May 2009, US machine tool consumption increased slightly by 5.8% from the previous month.

According to statistics released by the American Manufacturing Technology Association (AMT) and the American Machine Tool Distributors Association (AMTDA) on July 13, in May 2009, the United States produced 860 machine tools, a decrease of 26 units from April. Machine tool consumption totaled $109.9 million, an increase of 5.8% from April, but still a significant 72.3% decrease from May 2008's $3.916 billion. From January to May, the cumulative consumption of machine tools in the United States was $618.3 million, a figure that was 70.5% lower than the figure for the same period in 2008.
In terms of product categories, in May, the consumption of metal cutting machine tools was US$10.04 billion, an increase of 7.6% from the previous month, but a decrease of 71.4% from US$350.18 million in May 2008. The consumption of metal forming and manufacturing machine tools was US$ 9.66 million, a 10% decrease from the previous month and a 79.5% decrease from the US$ 46.99 million in May 2008. The chart below shows the trend of changes in US machine tool consumption from May 2008 to May 2009.
AMTDA Chairman Peter Borden said that total machine tool consumption rebounded slightly in May, but production declined. At present, from the increase in purchasing managers' index, inventory reduction and the increase in production index, it can be seen that the overall economic situation shows signs of recovery. However, because the federal government's dollar stimulates long-term misallocation, it is difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises to get support, which will affect the rapid recovery of the economy.
The report is also based on the five geographic regions of the United States, which counts the consumption of each region.
North East: Machine consumption in May was $27.8 million, an increase of 22.5% from the previous month, but a 50% decrease from the same period last year. From January to May, the total consumption of machine tools was $127.2 million, down 57.1% year-on-year.
Southern region: Machine consumption in May was 13.23 million US dollars, a slight decrease of 1% from the previous month and 72.2% from May 2008. From January to May, the total consumption of machine tools was 80.94 million US dollars, down 75.7% year-on-year.
Midwest: Machine consumption in May was US$27.15 million, a decrease of 12.6% from the previous month and a decrease of 80.5% from the same period last year. From January to May, the total consumption of machine tools was 175.58 million US dollars, down 75.2% year-on-year.
Central region: Machine consumption in May was US$21.38 million, down 8.8% from the previous month and down 80% from the same period last year. From January to May, the total consumption of machine tools was US$1.4563 billion, down 70.6% year-on-year.
