Glass Production Pulls Soda Ash Industry Demand

Global soda ash consumption fell by 7.6% in 2009, or 440,000 tons, and the growth rate from 2000 to 2008 was 4.2%. Consumers in the glass industry accounted for 53% of the total demand. This downward trend was brought about by the production of cleaning agents and chemicals.

The continuously rising economy has become a factor in the growth of the soda industry over the past decade or so. China was the only country in 2009 that had the trend of soda ash growth in a small number of countries. From 2000 to 2009, it accounted for 90% of the world's growth.

The future demand for soda ash is expected to increase by 3% over the next five years, mainly in flat glass, cleaning agents and water treatment. Moreover, the demand for soda ash in the mining and metals industries has also grown rapidly.
