This processing technology, called Surface Mechanical Grinding, was developed by the National (Joint) Laboratory of Materials Science, Shenyang Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In the experiment, the researchers chose nickel for processing. The result was a nano-lamella structure with a low-angle grain boundary and an average thickness of 20 nanometers. The hardness was as high as 6.4 gigapascals, and the grain coarsening temperature was higher than that of previously processed nickel. The material is at least 40 Kelvin, and the hardness and thermal stability have exceeded the limits of previous processing technology.
